Day 21: Oh Praise the Name -Martin W. Sampson, Dean Ussher, Benjamin William Hastings

The phrase in this song that really hits me is "His body bound and drenched in tears." I often think of the physical torment that Jesus went through but it is more important to recall His emotional torment.  He was forsaken by His best friends. They even denied that they knew Him.  God, His Father allowed Him to be tortured and mocked to death.  He was not only drenched in blood and sweat but also tears.  He cries out in Matthew 27:46

"My God, My God, why have You forsaken me?"

It's not that often that we go through physical torture in our daily lives, but we often go through emotional situations [losses, relationship-problems, loneliness, and betrayal].  Jesus has been through all these things before us and He knows how it feels.  Ask Him for help with your emotional situations.  He has been there and He understands.

Biblical Background

1 Corinthians 5:1-8

1 Now I make known to you, brethren, the gospel which I preached to you, which also you received, in which also you stand,

2 by which also you are saved, if you hold fast 1the word which I preached to you, unless you believed in vain.

3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures,

4 and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures,

5 and that He appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve.

 6 After that He appeared to more than five hundred brethren at one time, most of whom remain until now, but some have fallen asleep;

 7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles;

8 and last of all, as to one untimely born, He appeared to me also.

Lyrics

I cast my mind to Calvary
Where Jesus bled and died for me
I see His wounds, His hands, His feet
My Saviour on that cursed tree

His body bound and drenched in tears
They laid Him down in Joseph's tomb
The entrance sealed by heavy stone
Messiah still and all alone

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

And then on the third at break of dawn
The Son of heaven rose again
O trampled death where is your sting?
The angels roar for Christ the King

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forevermore
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

He shall return in robes of white
The blazing sun shall pierce the night
And I will rise among the saints
My gaze transfixed on Jesus' face

O praise the name of the Lord our God
O praise His name forever more
For endless days we will sing Your praise
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God
Oh Lord, oh Lord our God

Final Thoughts

Really think about the words as you sing a worship song.  My goal with these posts is to encourage you in a small way to worship thoughtfully and really connect with a worship song each day on a deeper level.  A friend of mine once said, "worship is never good or bad, it's given."  What she meant by this is if you're not really connecting with God through worship then you're just singing.  My prayer is that these buckets full of Grace can help you to really worship in a more meaningful way and have your worship truly be given.
