One Thing Remains by Jesus Culture

Why study what we sing?

When I worship through music, it is very helpful to me to look into how the Bible lines up to what I'm singing. This knowledge makes a superficial singing of the words much more difficult for me, and I hope that sharing this will help you to focus better on what you are singing and who you are singing to. The newest song that we’ve sung as a congregation is “One Thing Remains,” by Jesus Culture:

The lyrics to the song:

Verse 1
Higher than the mountains that I face,
Stronger than the power of the grave,
Constant in the trial and the change,
One thing remains.

Chorus
Your love never fails
Never gives up
It never runs out on me!
Your love!

Verse 2
On and on and on and on it goes.
It overwhelms and satisfies my soul.
And I never ever have to be afraid:
One thing remains.

BRIDGE
In death. in life I’m confident and
Covered by the power of Your great love.
My debt is paid there’s nothing that
Can separate my heart from Your great love.

Scriptural Backup for the song:

There are allusions in this song to many different scriptures. The chorus echoes the sentiment of Psalm 136 and many other places, saying, "His love endures forever!" This Psalm praises both who God is and what He has done throughout the history of Israel, repeating "His love endures forever" after each phrase. The repetition of the song’s Chorus in the same way speaks about who God is and what He has done in our lives and the chorus proclaims that "your love never fails, never gives up" (which is also in 1 Corinthians 13)--that it endures forever.

Romans 8:31-39 is also reflected in this song. Paul expresses in Romans 8 that no matter what may come against us and no matter what is in our way "we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us." The chapter speaks of how God, who gave up His own Son for us, will surely give us all things and bring us through all things.

Hebrews 9:15 says, "For this reason Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant." Our debt has been paid by Him and only Him.

In Hosea 13:14 the prophet declares that the Lord "will deliver this people from the power of the grave...will redeem them from death." The song proclaims that our God has shown His power over the grave through both Jesus’ resurrection and His bringing every Christian to life out of the death and the destruction of sin.

In the second verse of the song we sing "and I never have to be afraid." 1 John 4:18-19 says, "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love. We love because He first loved us."

What is this song really saying?

What this worship song is really saying is that we go through a lot of things in this life, and sometimes we may feel that we are at the end of ourselves and that there is no way out. But when there is absolutely nothing left of our own strength, our own energy, our own willpower...there is One Thing that Remains! Jesus Christ was sent to earth to die as a ransom for us, to pay our debt of sin, to redeem us from the grave. Because of this, there is an unspeakable joy that we are always trying to capture with worship songs. This song is another
expression to God that we are constantly trying to come to the end of ourselves and acknowledge that He is the One Thing that Remains.

chara = joy

[chara] : joy, gladness, delight, enjoyment, often enhanced by phrases like exceedingly great joy

In the fruits of the Spirit, the Greek word chara is translated as joy.  This word is found in many other places in the New Testament all of which are linked below.  Notice that happiness is not a fruit of the spirit but joy is listed as the second of the virtues.

Do not mistake happiness, which can be rude or thoughtless for the cares of others, for true joy.  Joy is that spark in the eye where we can be filled with gladness even during a terrible personal catastrophe because we know that God is with us and will never let us go.  You see joy is not selfish.  You can have joy for another person when something good happens for them.  In that way it is the opposite of envy.  Be strengthened today by these verses about joy.  The second fruit of the Holy Spirit living through us is that we delight in Him and find our Joy in knowing Jesus Christ in a personal relationship.  Don't just smile and be happy but have the true joy that comes from the Holy Spirit.

CS Lewis said that :
"It is not the part of the Christian to be perpetually solemn... our joy must be that kind, and it is the purest kind where we take each other seriously."

agape = love

agape in Greek

[agape] : love, affection, charity, good will

It is hard to express this Love that the Father has for us and this same love that we are to have for Him and for all others.  When we have the Spirit of God working in us and through us Agape-Love is the first fruit that begins to show.  It is not only first but it permeates every other virtue.  Without love the rest is worthless.  It deserves a powerful treatment and much reflection.  I would like to focus on agape-love being the fruit of the Holy Spirit working in you and through you.  Many times this word has been translated as charity.  What does this word agape (love) really mean in the bible?

Hereis a link to  all of the verses usingthis word agape in the New Testament.

Wow! That is a lot of verses!  If you didn't have time to read them all then here is my analysis.  I notice that none of these verses are about we like to call "puppy love" or "head over heels in love" or infatuated or intoxicated or out of control in love.  The word for those types of love in the Greek language is the word "eros" and it is not a fruit of the Holy Spirit.  The word agape, in contrast, is a deliberate love, a choice to love without anything in return, to love the unlovely, to see others with a love that is totally unselfish.  There are a lot of people that are looking for the next spiritual high... the next intoxicating moment with God to show them that God is dwelling in them and working through them.  However, the truth of the fruit of the Spirit is that the deliberate act of kindness/charity with nothing in return, as it says in 1st John:
No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his agape is perfected in us. - 1 Jo 4:12
This is the real experience with God that we should be looking for.

The Fruits of the Spirit Series

Simple Translation into English:

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit.  - Galatians 9:22-25

In the original Greek:

But the fruit of the Spirit is agape, chara, eirene, makrothymia, chrestotes, agathosyne, pistis, praotes, and egkrateia.  Against such things there is no law.

The fruit of the spirit are commonly referenced in sermons, conversation, and even children's songs.  I will be blogging a series which contains an in-depth study of each word in the original Greek with my commentary on its meaning.  In the original language of the Biblical writers there is a connotation for each word that can be lost with a simple translation.  Therefore, since these are extremely important words that describe a person who truly has the Holy Spirit living through them, we should delve into the deep meaning of each original Greek word and find the most vivid picture that we can of what the Bible is saying.  Click on the links to see each word study as they are posted.

Links to each study:

makrothymia = patience
chrestotes = kindness
agathosyne = goodness
pistis = faithfulness
praotes = gentleness
egkrateia = self-control

Can We Lose Our Salvation?

IMPORTANT
Read and Study the BIBLE! Ask our Lord to Enlighten your understanding as only He can.  Always pray before you study an issue that God will open it up to you and teach you with His Holy Spirit.  Many people have expounded on the Love of God and how He holds us in the palm of His hand and will never let us go.  There is also the parable of the prodigal Son with the Father having a celebration when the son comes home and accepting him.  However, there are some scriptures that we need to grapple with on the topic of "Can a Christian lose their Salvation?"

Here is a compilation of relevant scriptures on the topic:

Falling Away
Hebrews 6:4-5   4 It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, 5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age 6 and who have fallen away, to be brought back to repentance. To their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace. 7 Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. 8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned.

Sinning Willfully
Hebrews 10:26-31   26 If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, 27 but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. 28 Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29 How much more severely do you think someone deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified them, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him who said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” and again, “The Lord will judge his people.” 31 It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

Becoming Entangled
2 Peter 2:20  20 If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and are overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning.

22 Specific Sins that could keep you out of Heaven
1 Cor. 6:7-11  7 The very fact that you have lawsuits among you means you have been completely defeated already. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated? 8 Instead, you yourselves cheat and do wrong, and you do this to your brothers and sisters. 9 Or do you not know that wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men 10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Galatians 5:19 -21   19 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Not everyone who says “Lord, Lord”
Matthew 7:21-23  21 “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

Acts 19:13-16   13 Some Jews who went around driving out evil spirits tried to invoke the name of the Lord Jesus over those who were demon-possessed. They would say, “In the name of the Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” 14 Seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, were doing this. 15 One day the evil spirit answered them, “Jesus I know, and Paul I know about, but who are you?” 16 Then the man who had the evil spirit jumped on them and overpowered them all. He gave them such a beating that they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.

Sin Leading to Death
1 John 5:16-17   16 If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life. I refer to those whose sin does not lead to death. There is a sin that leads to death. I am not saying that you should pray about that. 17 All wrongdoing is sin, and there is sin that does not lead to death.

Fallen from Grace
Galatians 5:4 4 You who are trying to be justified by the law have been alienated from Christ; you have fallen away from grace.

Blotted Out
Revelation 3:5  5 The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels.

Urgent Attention Required
Don't be sad or discouraged by these Scriptures.  That is not the point.  God's Word is showing us that we need to persevere till the end.  Why do you want to know if you can lose your salvation?  Meditate on the scriptures and you will find that our God is both Merciful and Holy.  Perhaps a better question is: "How can I show God how much I appreciate and love Him for who He is and thank Him for saving me with every moment that I have?"

"Deep Cries Out to Deep” -Psalm 42:7

waterspouts

There is a new song that the Worship Team at Abundant Life Fellowship has been working on. As you learn this song and give Him praise through it, our prayer is that you let go of your deep and let it call out to the Deep in God.  Here is some background to the biblical roots of the song with a link to the music video done by Bethel Church at the bottom.

Background for the Background:

In Numbers 16 the Bible records an event in the life of a man named Korah. He was of the tribe of Levi and therefore set apart to be a member of the priesthood in Israel. He rebuked Moses, saying:
"You have gone too far! The whole community is holy, every one of them, and the LORD is with them. Why then do you set yourselves above the LORD's assembly?" -Numbers 16:3
He resented Moses' and Aaron's authority, and felt that he and his supporters could lead the Israelites more effectively. Later in the chapter, the earth opens underneath him and swallows him along with the others in his rebellion. He did not recognize the sovereignty of God and would not humble himself.

Background for Psalm 42:

This Psalm includes the title: "A Maschil of David for the sons of Korah." A maschil (MAS-keel) is an instructive song, meant to teach us something about how to live, and the sons of Korah (many scholars believe) are the descendants of this Korah in Numbers 16 who rebelled against the Lord and was swallowed up. Having the story of the wrath of God so attached to your family name must have shaped the very core of who these men were. They were Levites, serving in and around the temple with their lives, singing praises to the God who destroyed their ancestor when he rebelled. These men must have been desperately wanting to be closer to God with a true "fear of the Lord."

Digging Deeper:

 "Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterspouts; all your waves and breakers have swept over me." -Psalm 42:7
We don't have waterspouts around here. But David had likely seen one off the coast of Syria, and it helped him to put into words the cry of a heart desperately longing for God. A waterspout is basically a tornado in the ocean. These are often extremely large and amazingly violent, pulling up tons of ocean water and gushing it out into the clouds.
Can you relate to this sort of deep sin in your heritage that you may not even have been alive for? Is there a generational curse in your life that is so attached to you it's like part of your name? We all have the deep sin nature inherited from Adam in ourselves, but most of us have sins that hit particularly close to home in our family history. This imagery of a violent tornado sucking up the deepest, most hidden waters of my soul from down on the ocean floor and shooting them at amazing velocity into the immeasurable depths of God are what singing Praise to God is really about. His depths are so much bigger than our depths that they can cleanse all that muck from the depths of our ocean and turn it into a cleansing rain.

With this Psalm, David is teaching all of us that our Deep needs to call out to the Deep in God. It was true for the sons of Korah, and it is just as true for us today.
